Dear Class,
Due to the recent economic meltdown, a lot of people got laid off. I hope that didn't happen to you or any one of your friends around you. Today, we are going to talk about "layoffs". Think about the following questions beforehand and feel free to share your views with us in class today.
Q1: Has anyone around you lost a job? What happened?
Q2: Are you worried you might get a pink slip and get laid off due to the economic recession?
Q3: If people get the ax in Taiwan, what can they do? Can they file for unemployment?
Q4: What can we do to avoid being fired?
(1) boost our competitiveness (language ability, professional knowledge, managerial skills, etc)
(2) learn how to butter our supervisor up (brownnose our supervisor)
(3) never get off work too early. Work overtime and show people how hardworking we are.
(4) backstab our coworkers in order to survive
(5) take more on-the-job training or take degree programs
Here is this week's assignment. Please post your answer to the question below on the forum by November 6.
Q: Are you worried you might get a pink slip and get laid off due to the economic recession? What can we do to avoid being fired?
If you have any questions, let me know. See you in class today at 9:00 p.m.
